Cholar Dal Recipe
Ingredients:
1 c of chick peas (soaked)
1/4 tsp of turmeric
1/2 tsp of salt
1 pc of chile (green)
2 tsps of cumin (ground)
2 Tbsps of raisins
1-1/2 Tbsps of oil (vegetable)
1 pc of bay leaf
5 pcs of cardamom pods
2 pcs of cloves
1 pc of dried chile (red)
1 or 2 pcs of cinnamon sticks
1/4 tsp of kalonji seeds
2 Tbsps of shredded coconut
1 Tbsps of chile (green); seeded and minced
1/4 tsp of garam masala
Ghee (optional)
Instructions:
Cook the chickpeas with water, turmeric and chile till they become tender or about an hr. Discard the chiles then add cumin and salt. Take out from the heat.
Place (one cup) mixture inside the blender; blend till pureed, adding small amount of water when necessary. Place them back on the saucepan; add the raisins and let it simmer while keeping it warm.
Place oil on a skillet; heat then cook the dried chile and bay leaf till chile turns dark. Add cardamom, cloves, and cinnamon; fry for five secs. Add the kalonji then cook it for some more secs.
Lower down the heat into gentle and add coconut and minced chiles; cook them for some secs while constantly stirring.
Take out from the heat then pour onto the saucepan. Simmer the mixture for some more mins then take out from the heat.
When serving, garnish it with fresh lemon cut to wedges then sprinkle cilantro and ghee. Serve at once.
